View: Ontology Definition

Answers the question: What domain concepts must the AF support?

This view identifies the concepts that are to be used within the IT (SoS) Archtiecture Description Framework These concepts are the underlying conceptual models for the Information Technology System of Systems (SoS). This set of concepts is also called a 'concept model' or 'meta model'. This approach to the ontology focuses on whole systems. The Systems are identified in a blue shade of color.

Information Technology System of Systems (SoS) Concepts and Terminology

The concepts and terminology for the Information Technology System of Systems (SoS) uses the concept of a System Description to document the various systems that are defined within the Information Technology System of Systems (SoS). The following picture shows all of the systems contained within the Information Technology System of Systems (SoS)Enterprise as a System of Systems (SoS).

This diagram will show the set of systems that will have system descriptions. This exercise has not been done yet. Candidates are likely to be:

  • Network of IT Systems (SoS)
  • Information Technology System.
  • Hardware as a system (configuration of hardware)
  • Software as a system (configuration of Software)
  • Software as a system of software objects (possible SWAF)

NOTE: Software Architecture Description Framework

A software Architecture Description Framework would be the second AF supporting this area. Software Architecture Description needs to highlight software objects across a whole network of information technology systems. Some of these architectures may represent single applications or the whole set of software objects.

In the software area, (SWADF) the primary components will be standard UML and Martin Fowler type patterns that shape the styles of software and applications. For example each type of software component has a pattern.

The following model highlights the types of information technology systems where AD can be created..

This set of ontology elements comes from the following holistic set of system and enterprise conceptual models.

System Concepts and Terminology

This approach uses the system concepts and system description to identify and describe each of the systems within a system. The System Description has been created from a System Description Architecture Description Framework. This set of concepts can be found in the following link:
