From a systems thinking perspective.

Leadership is an emergent property of carrying out the activities of a manager (defined property). Leadership is created through the interaction of a persons skills, knowledge, experience and behaviours and the activities of a manager. Great Leaders have 'something extra'. All managers (top to bottom) should be great leaders.
