System Element: Identification and Relationships
An Integrated Management System is situated in the Enterprise as a set of capabilities that interact to deliver a defined capability within an organization. The elements that fit into the Enterprise are shown in the next diagram.
The top management for an organization establish the boundary of the management system. In general, the organizations below this top management organization realise the set of capabilities for the management system. A capability can be replicated in various organizations as each capability has a single process defining the core roles and activities of the capability. (e.g. project management capability with a single project management process).
Management System Capabilities
The set of capabilities that form part of the management system are typically identified to meet the requirements of the relevant standards. The harmonized capabilities of a management system are shown below. These capabilities are realized through the allocation of capabilities to organizations or teams.
Capability Model
The top level Capabilities necessary to establish and implement an Integrated Management System are shown below:
These capabilities are realized through the various organizations and teams formed for the Integrated Management System.
The planning element ensures that there are sufficient competent people, process and technology to achieve the objectives set in the plan for the whole Integrated Management System. These plans also enable a baseline for performance management (measurement and rewards). The Measurement and Rewards element allows the tracking and usage of all of ther other elements in the context of the overall Integrated Management Systemperformance.
The next diagram shows the typical (example) capability sets and the relationships between the capabilities. These capabilities align with the capability dimension of the operating model.
These capabilities are based upon the following Process Model that shows the relationships between the processes.
These underlying processes are mapped to External Standards, Regulations and best practice. This mapping is captured in an External Requirements Indicator Map (ERIM)
