System Element: Technology Systems

Within an organization, every Technology System is an asset the organization manages from purchase to disposal.

The following Technology (SoS) System Description provides more information on Technology Systems.

PDF:: System Description: Technology as a System of Systems (SoS), Version 0.2, 31-May-2021

Technology can be seen in two ways:

  • a System Element (part of a system or capability)
  • a system in its own right (e.g. Truck, Car, Aircraft, Computer, etc)

In this way, technology may be a 'holon'.

Enterprise (SoS) System Breakdown Structure: Focus on Technology

Technology is an essential system element of a capability. This system element either focuses on improving the performance of the people realising the capability or in the development of new technology systems.

Technology Domains

The things necessary to carry out work activities. This might include the following technology system types:

Technology Domain System Types Conceptual Model

  • Information Systems
  • Electro-mechanical tools
  • Workspace
  • Transportation
    • Trucks, Cars, Aircraft, Ships
  • Food Preparation
  • Manufacturing
  • New Product / Service Development
  • and more...

All items need to be budgeted for in the annual plan.

Tools focus on improving productivity for the team members. Tools may be IT related or Non-IT related.

Tools are identified based upon an analysis of the work activities and decisions that are performed.

Information Systems

  • Electro-mechanical tools
  • Facilities
  • Desks, fittings etc
  • Office Supplies

Business Continuity Planning and Security

Technology is a key part of business continuity planning and security.

Assets

Assets are generally things that have been made, acquired or modified to support the realisation or implementation of a capability or as part of new product development.

In the technology types section above, assets are the technology capabilities that are available for use in the organization.

All technology objects must be classified according to their use and expected life time within the organization.

An asset register (Generally using an automated IT system) helps classify assets for financial purposes. Any of the assets or technology objects will generally be classified according to the funding models for:

  • Operational expense (Op Ex)
  • Capital Expense (Cap Ex)
  • Depreciation (fixed assets)
  • Current Assets (inventory).

More information (to be updated).

Technology Asset Types

Technology is fundamental to the productivity and success of the enterprise. The following technology asset types may be used within the enterprise.

Technology Types and Objects

Technology Capabilities are the technology objects that are available for use within the enterprise. These technologies fall into the following categories:

  • Current Asset (e.g. inventory)
  • Fixed Asset (Value adding for a long term )
  • Temporary Technology Capabilities (Rental or contract based access to technology capabilities)
  • Consumable Technology (pens, staples, paper, etc).

Work in Progress forms another use of technology:

  • New Product Development (prototypes, components, test equipment, etc)
  • Consumable / Raw Materials
  • Production (the elements that go into products)

All of these types represent different types of technology objects and their states. These types apply to all technology areas '/ domains.
