Innovation and Change Capabilities

Overview

All improvements to the business require creativity and innovation to maximize the impact of any change to improve the way products and services are delivered to customers and value is delivered to stakeholders.

The Purpose of the Innovation and Change Capabilities are to create the operational capabilities used to deliver products and / or services to the organizations customers.

The Innovation and change capabilities are made up of a number of teams and suppliers to make new or revised elements of the organization. These elements are: Products and Services, Aligned information services, training and development materials. These capabilities have been created by the management capabilities.

The Innovation and Change capabilities are based upon the Process Model typically has the following elements:

Overview of the Design, Develop and Change Capabilities

  • Product and Service Marketing and Strategy
  • Product and Service Innovation Life Cycle Capability
  • Capability Innovation Life Cycle Capability
  • Information Systems Innovation Life Cycle Capability
  • Technology Innovation Life Cycle Capability

Product and Service Innovation Life Cycle Capability

This capability establishes a set of customer requirements and translates them into a new or updated product and service delivery capability that can deliver the products and services.

This capability identifies 'breakthrough' (significantly new and different); major and minor updates to product and service capability.

The capability also includes the long term marketing activities that understand and anticipate future customer needs and document the longer range product and service strategy. In addition, the underlying technology strategy is prepared in conjunction with suppliers and the various delivery teams.

This ensures that the future business objectives will continue to be met by decisions taken today.

The teams working in this area are generally cross-functional using a concurrent engineering approach. A product manager is typically responsible for the results of the improvement according to a business plan or business model. Product managers typically have total life cycle responsibility. (E.g. idea to retirement).

Capability Innovation Life Cycle Capability

This capability establishes and manages the way work (activities and decisions) are carried out across the organization. This provides a single approach to documenting activities, roles and responsibilities. This also provides the basis for job descriptions, and business architectures that are subsequently automated by IT Systems.

A process manager is responsible for the performance of this process where ever this process is used.

These implemented processes provide the basis for the Business Architecture and Data Architecture used in the IT organization.

Business processes can also be developed using an evolutionary approach. The people responsible for the business process will retain ownership for the work until the work is no longer needed.

The process manager work is activity and role based. This means that a manager with domain knowledge may

Information System Innovation Life Cycle Capability

The IT Component capability establishes and manages the way IT Solution Components are integrated into the organization. These systems tend to automate the business processes created through the Process Innovation capability.

This IT Component Innovation capability manages the design and development of the following components:

  • Computer Systems (Desktop, Server, Laptop, Mobile, etc)
  • Networks (LAN, WAN)
  • Application Software
  • Data and Storage

Each of these IT components have the following characteristics:

  • Defined Interfaces
  • System Requirements (resources, functions, and performance)
  • Unique types of tools and assets
  • Unique skills required.

each will be described using a System Requirement Template (not updated yet).

Training and Documentation components can be provided for any of the above capabilities. This capability identifies the activities and critical interfaces necessary to deliver training components for a solution.

NOTE: Training and documentation may be available in many formats ... not just hard copy. This also includes language translations.

Purpose

The purpose of the set of innovation capabilities are:

  • To identify the customer needs (today and the future)
  • To identify the capabilities of the suppliers that support the current and future needs of the organization.
  • To introduce (improve / innovate) new products and retire old products
  • To improve / innovate capabilities
  • To improve / innovate information systems
  • To improve / innovate technology systems
  • To transition these changes into operation.

Performance

Typical performance for the Innovation capability:

  • Time to market
  • Time to improve a process and realize a capability
  • Time to improve an information system
  • Number of problems / issues during ramp-up.
  • etc.

No one team can achieve the objectives for this capability (unless a small team).

The performance of the processes in this area also make a difference ...

Resources

The resources required to achieve the performance objectives for this capability.

Design Elements

These processes work with Programme / Project Management processes. The life cycle processes describe the translation of requirements / architecture to a delivered change.

  • Selection of a capability life cycle.
  • New product development processes
  • cross-functional teams.
  • to develop the design elements necessary for the product and service delivery capability
